How to Backflush your Espresso Machine

How to Backflush your Espresso Machine:

  1. First thing to do is to remove your regular filter basket from your portafilter and insert your blank disc. Now is a good time to check the drip tray on your machine is empty as some machines empty directly into the tray, if your machine is plumbed in then you won’t have to worry.
  2. Take your espresso machine cleaning powder and put roughly half a teaspoon into your blank disc and attach to your espresso machine.
  3. Its now time to run water into your basket by allowing the water to flow for roughly 10 seconds. This will then mix with the detergent so that when you stop the flow after 10 seconds the water will backflush the line and clear out any residual coffee granules.
  4. Repeat this process between 3-5 times after which you will then rinse and clean your blank disc of any powder.
  5. You can now reattach your basket with no powder in and rinse as prior to ensure there is no powder sitting in your line.
  6. If your machine has multiple group heads you can now repeat for each one but if your machine is a single group, the internal cleaning is now complete.
